Well, I didn't want him not to win, but i'm still unimpressed by the disrespect for the sport he showed at the trials. A fantastic achievement athletically and I agree with OldScottie that he will likely do the same in the 5000m. I see Bet 365 have him at what I think is a generous 2.25, which did surprise me, but I still wouldn't be betting on him though. Compared to the women's 10,000 I found the race incredibly boring. I was constantly waiting for something to happen and it just didn't materialise. Well, not until the last lap anyway. I didn't find that too exciting either, race wise, because Mo never looked in danger. After he crossed the line it was exciting to see that a Brit had actually won gold.

truerunner - you really do sound like a bitter old keyboard warrior. We have witnessed one of the most enthralling 10km races the world has ever seen and yet you still have to pick petty points about a inconsequential race held months ago that Mo only ran to satisfy the event organisers and BBC. He could win the UK 1500m champs any day of the week but didnt feel like it and has won the Olympics so u can't question his decision to not bother with that race.

It was definitely the right decision reinstating makloufi and it was pretty stupid that anyone tried to get him thrown out of the 1500 in the first place. However, I do agree that this thread should probably be kept for talking about how great mo is. Ok so the uk trials was a but of an error of judgement but hes basically seems like a great guy and is definitely a great runner and he havnt got too many of them to celebrate!

RMcT, it looked like Makloufi wasn't even knackered after he crossed the line
and had another 100m in him. I have to agree with your sentiment that it was good he was gone (before reinstatement), in hindsight, but it wasn't really addressing the specific point I was making. I didn't mean to annoy anyone airing my opinion about Mo, probably perceived as knocking celebrations and all that, but I was only being honest.

Given the recent banning of athletes for 'not trying', especially
Makloufi in the 800m, shouldn't Mo have been banned from coming to the
Games in the first place? Not only did he 'not try', he didn't even turn
up. Why is there one rule for Mo in the Olympic trials and another rule
for Makloufi in an 800m Olympic heat?

Makloufi was originally disqualified from the Olympics for 'not trying'. You appear to be arguing that Mo should have been disqualified from a subsequent meeting for not turning up. There's your difference! How long should these DQs last for then?

Trickstat, it is a bit disingenuous to say that it was a different meeting. There were basically two competitions going on with different prizes. The U.K. championships and the Olympic trials. I think that they held the 5000m on the Friday didn't they? If so, then I can understand why 'certain people' wanted Mo to run on the Saturday or Sunday. We all know what those reasons were. However, I am not going to change my mind that he should have run the 1500m final on the Sunday as well. It just isn't right that what he did was tolerated. The ethical point I made was about athletes at the Olympics getting thrown out for not trying, whatever the motive, as it was against the Olympic spirit. I don't see why that perspective shouldn't also apply to the Olympic trials and the U.K. Championships alone, trials included or not. Yes, he got double gold, but his achievement is tainted for me because of those shenanigans. Talent is no excuse! I do genuinely blame 'others' more than him, I am not looking to take the easy way out by saying that, but he has to take some responsibility. I didn't really give a monkey about his 'early' Mobot and was amazed he seemed to get more crap for that than going AWOL for a final! Please think of the guy busting his guts out who missed out on the final. I really hope he comes out and formally apologises in due course. Finally, I would say that new rules need to be introduced about this issue. If you enter a competition, with rounds, you don't waltz off after doing the first round. The only reason a rule doesn't exist must be because it never entered someone's head that it could happen.
